Tracheostomy Management Simulation Workshop for Speech-language Therapists

Practical tracheostomy training day for speech-language therapists (adult and/or paediatric) using simulation.

Description

This is a hands-on training day consisting entirely of interactive skill training sessions and case scenarios in the Simulation Centre for Patient Safety (SCPS). This course runs annually and is the only New Zealand based tracheostomy simulation-training course for speech-language therapists.

Come and learn how to assess and manage tracheostomy patients in a safe learning environment that is as close to real-life as you can get. Simulation training offers a solution for SLTs to gain the necessary practical/manual skills required in most tracheostomy competency programmes in a cost and time efficient way (Ward et al, 2014).

The course will provide speech-language therapists with the opportunity to link current evidence-based theory of tracheostomy assessment and management to practice. It is aimed to give participants the confidence and necessary skills and tools to effectively manage this population group within a multi-disciplinary team within their own organisation.

The workshop is appropriate for clinicians with a minimum-moderate level of experience in tracheostomy care. Participants can choose whether they focus on the management of babies/children, adults or both.

An online resource of core and recommended literature, videos, websites,  and chat forum is available for participants before and after the course. These resources are provided to ensure participants have a sound knowledge base on which to hang their practical skills and clinical reasoning once in the simulated scenarios. Participants will be expected to complete the required pre-reading and take an online assessment prior to attending the study day.
